Energy Efficiency Rating

In an effort to assist utility customers of the City of Elizabeth City’s electrical system, the City has developed an Energy Efficiency Rating for most residential units.  The Energy Efficiency Rating looks at the 12-month moving average for utility usage and correlates it to the square footage of the home.  This allows us to determine how many kilowatt hours (kWh) the home will use under normal circumstances.  As an example, if a home has been determined to use one kWh per square foot and the home has 1500 square feet, the average monthly usage would be 1500 kWh.

The City’s retail rate for residential electric service is $12.48 per month plus 10.94¢ per kWh.   Customers can obtain a home’s average kWh usage per month and multiply it by the retail purchase price to determine what an average month’s bill would be.   For the example given above of 1500 kWh per month usage, the monthly bill would equate to $176.58.

The Energy Efficiency Rating provided by the City will be representative of the lifestyle of the former resident, i.e. heating and cooling preferences.  If the home has been vacant for a period of time, the rating may be skewed.

Square footage information for some dwellings is not available on Pasquotank County Tax Department records, which is the source of our information.  However, the City can compute the efficiency rating if the square footage is provided to us.
